Shanghai Pudong International Airport's fourth runway passed the industry acceptance, conducted by the Southeast Regional Administration of General Administration of Civil Aviation of China on Dec 25-26. This marked an end to the construction of the new runway.

The 4th runway project includes a 3,800-meter long, 60-meter wide runway, an auxiliary taxiway and some support facilities including complimentary navigational lights, security, fire-fighting, power supply, drainage and automatic timing corrector systems. The fourth runway, along with an auxiliary taxiway and traffic control facilities, has been finished since late 2013 and will be put into service in the near future. With the new runway, Pudong International Airport will be able to handle 60 million passengers, 555,000 flight movements, and 4.75 million tons of cargo and mail annually.

The new runway is believed to meet China's strategic deployment of large aircraft manufacturing, offering strong support for the airport's international development.

The 3,400-meter fifth runway will be used for the flight tests of the COMAC C919 airliner and is still under construction.
