Singapore Airlines Ltd.'s passenger business continued its recovery, with passenger load factor for May at its highest level since the Covid-19 pandemic began.

The recovery in air travel demand came as Singapore relaxed border restrictions in April, removing the need for quarantines and on-arrival Covid-19 tests for fully vaccinated travelers, the company said Wednesday.

"Apart from North Asia, travel demand recovered rapidly across all route regions," Singapore Airlines said.

The flag carrier's passenger load factor was 78.2% in May, versus 14.3% a year earlier. It carried a total 1.71 million passengers in the month, up 17% from April.

However, the airline's cargo business worsened as demand was hurt by pandemic controls in China. "In addition, more bellyhold space was allocated for baggage carriage as passenger load factors improved," Singapore Airlines said. Singapore Airlines' cargo load factor for May was 65.4% versus 87.7% a year earlier.
