SAN FRANCISCO (AP) _ Slack Technologies Inc. (WORK) on Thursday reported a loss of $27.9 million in its fiscal first quarter.

On a per-share basis, the San Francisco-based company said it had a loss of 5 cents. Earnings, adjusted for stock option expense and amortization costs, were 8 cents per share.

The results exceeded Wall Street expectations. The average estimate of four analysts surveyed by Zacks Investment Research was for a loss of 2 cents per share.

The work messaging service posted revenue of $273.4 million in the period, also beating Street forecasts. Four analysts surveyed by Zacks expected $272.6 million.

Slack shares have climbed 3% since the beginning of the year. In the final minutes of trading on Thursday, shares hit $43.56, a climb of 9% in the last 12 months.
