Southern Co.'s board has raised the energy provider's quarterly dividend by 2.9%, to 72 cents from 70 cents.

The new payout, equal to $2.88 a year, represents an annual yield of about 3.98% based on Monday's trading price of $72.40.

The Atlanta company said the increased dividend is payable June 6 to shareholders of record May 20.
