Automaker Stellantis buys stake in hydrogen mobility expert Symbio. In addition to BMW and Toyota, the French parent company of Citroën, Peugeot and Opel is now betting heavily on hydrogen technology for vehicles.

Stellantis, one of the world's largest car manufacturers, is now also plunging into hydrogen technology. Car manufacturers such as BMW and Toyota already preceded Stellantis in developing hydrogen-electric cars.

Equal importance

Stellantis' previously presented hydrogen commercial vehicles, the Opel Viaro, Citroën Jumpy and Peugeot Expert, were developed by France's Symbio. The joint venture of tire specialist Michelin and auto supplier Faurecia now owns 33.3 percent of Stellantis.

Stellantis CEO, Carlos Tavares statement, "Interweaving an equal stake in Symbio will strengthen our leading position in hydrogen vehicles by supporting our production of fuel cell vans in France."

By 2025 50,000 fuel cells

Symbio plans to produce about 50,000 fuel cells each year starting in 2025. Later this year, it will begin construction of a new plant in Saint-Fons, France. By 2028, Symbio plans to scale up production to 10,000 fuel cells a year.
