PEARL RIVER, N.Y. (AP) _ Sterling Bancorp (STL) on Wednesday reported third-quarter net income of $95.7 million.

The bank, based in Pearl River, New York, said it had earnings of 49 cents per share. Earnings, adjusted for costs related to mergers and acquisitions, came to 52 cents per share.

The results topped Wall Street expectations. The average estimate of four analysts surveyed by Zacks Investment Research was for earnings of 51 cents per share.

The bank holding company posted revenue of $257.6 million in the period. Its revenue net of interest expense was $246.4 million, which did not meet Street forecasts.
