IRVINE, Calif. (AP) _ Sunstone Hotel Investors Inc. (SHO) on Thursday reported a key measure of profitability in its third quarter. The results topped Wall Street expectations.

The real estate investment trust, based in Irvine, California, said it had funds from operations of $21.3 million, or 10 cents per share, in the period.

The average estimate of seven analysts surveyed by Zacks Investment Research was for funds from operations of 8 cents per share.

Funds from operations is a closely watched measure in the REIT industry. It takes net income and adds back items such as depreciation and amortization.

The company said it had a loss of $29.3 million, or 13 cents per share.

The hotel real estate investment trust, based in Irvine, California, posted revenue of $167.4 million in the period, also topping Street forecasts. Five analysts surveyed by Zacks expected $165.5 million.
