Handelsbanken publishes climate report regarding its lending

The Bank has made several significant advances in its environmental work during 2021. We have set ambitious climate targets, signed up to the Net-Zero Banking Alliance, transferred our index funds to Paris-Aligned Benchmarks, and committed to ensure that our climate targets are verified by the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi). Now we are taking another important step by publishing a climate report in relation to our lending.

Climate change is likely the single largest challenge facing us in this age, and we can clearly see a steady increase of both interest and demand as to how the financial sector manages the risks and opportunities linked to these changes. In order to contribute to increased insights and awareness on these matters, Handelsbanken has published a climate report covering the Bank's lending, which has been prepared in accordance with the recommendations of the Task Force on Climate-Related Financial Disclosures (TCFD).

"Always seeking to deepen our understanding, analysing and being transparent are cornerstones of our sustainability work. Knowledge is key to our own sustainability journey, but also to allow us to support our customers' development and transition. This is particularly pertinent when it comes to slowing, as well as managing the effects of, climate change. So we hope, and we believe, that this report will contribute to exactly that - further understanding," says Catharina Belfrage Sahlstrand, Group Head of Sustainability and Climate action at Handelsbanken.

Among other things, the report includes the Bank's first forward-looking analysis of future risks linked to climate change. Specifically, the analysis looks at the Bank's property lending in Gothenburg, an area highlighted by the Swedish Civil Contingencies Agency as one of the most exposed places in Sweden in terms of climate-related risks.
