£7.5m visitor attraction project at Marwell Zoo

Sweett Group, the provider of professional services for the construction and management of building and infrastructure projects, has been appointed by Marwell Wildlife to provide quantity surveying services on a unique, new visitor attraction at Marwell Zoo.

The 1,000m tropical house, which is the biggest attraction constructed by the zoo to date, includes an exhibition space with adjacent education and interpretation areas. Developed to house an array of species currently held by the zoo, alongside new arrivals, the proposed exhibit will eventually be heated by an anaerobic digester, powered by animal waste, creating a high-quality, immersive visitor attraction.

This unique house has been designed to include a specialist ETFE semi-transparent roof covering, over a steel structure, which will balance the needs of flora and fauna, whilst maximising heat gain. The building will nestle into the landscape, in order to limit its visibility outside the zoo. Due to be completed in 2017, the exhibit will deliver guaranteed close-proximity animal viewing, whilst enhancing the setting at Marwell Zoo.
