Water supply restored after three days; BMC to fine contractors of coastal road project, who ruptured the pipeline

The water supply of Marine Drive and its adjoining areas was finally restored on Tues-day afternoon. On Saturday, a pipeline had ruptured. The BMC said that it will impose penalty on the appointed contractors of the Coastal Road Project (CRP) for the pipeline rupture that dis-rupted water supply in vari-ous residential areas of south Mumbai and also flooded the area. "The coastal road authority is in-specting the matter, follow-ing which a fine will be im-posed on the contractor who were carrying out digging works at the spot," Chakra-pani Alle, assistant munici-pal commissioner told FPJ.

Alle stated the leakage was repaired on Monday night, following which regular wa-ter supply was restored. He also pointed out that the leakage may have happened while the workers were car-rying out piling works.

On Saturday night a 600 mm water supply pipeline at the CRP construction site at Marine Drive got ruptured following which water start-ed leaking out. BMC engi-neers from the water supply department were deployed into action on Saturday and after a 48-hour long opera-tion, the civic body was able to repair the leakage.

"The operation took so long because the source of actual leakage was detected only on Monday morning, following which the tubes and valves were replaced with new ones," said an official from the water supply depart-ment.

Residents stated that watersupply was restored after 9 pm on Tuesday. They also stated that BMC hadarranged water tankers for them as there was no water supply since Saturday.

A sessions court has denied bail to a 43-year-old who has multiple cases against him across the city and Navi Mumbai for outraging mod-esty of women. In the pres-ent case, he allegedly gained sexual pleasure from a physiotherapist by pretending to have a sexual problem.

The court in its order while denying him bail not-ed that in various police sta-tions offences are regis-tered against Eric Ankle-saria for outraging modesty of women which prima fa-cie shows that he might be a habitual offender.

The court observed that, it prima facie appears that he visited the informant to get sexual pleasure by deceiv-ing her.

A major fire broke out at a chemical factory in Taloja MIDC on Tuesday morning. At least ten fire engines were pressed into services.

As per the Taloja Fire sta-tion, they received the fire call around 11.51 am and the blaze engulfed the Azeocryst Organics Private Limited located at plot

"The fire engines from Ulwe, Kalamoboli, Panvel, Kharghar, MIDC, and ad-joining fire stations have been sent," said an official from Taloja Fire station. He added that the fire had spread across the company and the fire fighting is go-ing on. There is no informa-tion of human losses in the fire till this news went into printing.

The Azad Maidan police ar-rested two history sheeters for allegedly assaulting a se-curity guard with screw driver and trying to rob a medical store. The accused are identified as Noor Mo-hammad alias Laddu Karim Shaikh, 40, and Subbayya alias Subhya Rangnath Naidu, 41, while their third accomplice is still at large.

The incident took place on February 1, at 5.45 am when when Mohammad Afzal Sail, 25, the guard of a medical store in Marine Lines saw three unknown persons try-ing to break open the store's locker. When he began shout-ing to deter them, the two of them turned on him and al-legedly hit with a screw driv-er and escaped.

Aaditya calls for re-examination of 'not wetlands'

Directs officials that the conservation of wetlands should be included in the 'My Earth Campaign'

Environment and Climate Change Minister Aaditya Thackeray on Tuesday asked the district adminis-tration to re-examine "not wetlands" identified earlier. He also directed that the conservation of wetlands should be included in the 'My Earth Campaign'' andworkshop should be held at the department level for the concerned staff.

He gave these directives at the Maharashtra State Wet-land Authority meeting held in Mumbai on Tues-day.

Aaditya, who is the chair-man of the Maharashtra State Wetland Authority, said that the state govern-ment has taken up the pro-tection of mangroves forest across the state. He argued that the wetlands in the state need to be preserved and conserved on the lines of mangroves conserva-tion. This needs to be taken up as per the Supreme Court guidelines.

Aaditya suggested that all the sites which have been verified as 'Not Wetland' should be re-verified.

Despite a good supply of gar-lic in the wholesale market, there is no respite in the re-tail market as it is being sold above Rs150 per kg while the wholesale rate has come down under Rs 100 per kg.

Good supply brings down wholesale price of garlic, no respite in retail market

The price of garlic had touched Rs 250 per kg during October-November when the supply had dried up.

Garlic is one of the essen-tial ingredients in the kitchen and its price impact the budget as well as the taste of the food. Last year, during October-November, the supply of the garlic had come down to 700 quintals per day and the wholesale price had touched even Rs 180 to Rs 200 per kg.

However, for the last fort-night, the supply has seen a sharp rise. However, there is no such respite in the retail market. Even today, good quality garlic is being sold at Rs 200 per kg.

According to traders at the agriculture produce market committee (APMC) in Vashi, there is a rise in the domes-tic supply of garlic. "The Vashi APMC receives garlic from Rajasthan, UP, Gujarat,and Punjab apart from Ma-harashtra," said a trader. He added that in the last one month there is a good supply of garlic.

Normally, the average sup-ply of garlic at APMC, Vashi is around 1000 quintals. "The supply has risen by around 200% since October. During October, around 700 quintals garlic was arriving at the market which is has reached 1800 quintals," said the trader.

As per the APMC adminis-tration, for the last one week, around 1700 to 1800 quintals garlic is arriving in the mar-ket which was around 1000 quintals in January first week. "Even from January, there is an 80% rise in garlic supply," said an official from APMC.

However, the dip in price is not being extended to buy-ers. "Retailers sell such com-modities as per the choice and there is no control," said a trader.

Tanker with propane gas topples on Ghodbunder Rd, no casualties

A tanker carrying propane gas toppled on Ghodbunder Road on Monday. However, no casualties were reported in this incident.

"The incident took place at around 11:15 pm, when a tanker (GJ06 AZ 8841) car-rying propane gas toppled near Gaimukh area in Ghodbunder Road, Thane.

The tanker was heading to-wards Jamnagar, Gujarat when the driver of the tanker lost his control lead-ing to the accident," said an official from RDMC Thane.

The police and RDMC (Re-gional Disaster Manage-ment Cell) team reached the spot with quick rescue team, fire engine and 4 hy-dra cranes after the depart-ment received an alert call regarding the incident.

A total of 84,787 hens were culled in Navapur tehsil of Nandurbar district on Tuesday taking the total to 2,21,492 since Sunday after the avian influenza reports came positive from eight poultry farms. Nandurbar district collector Dr Rajen-dra Bharud told Free Press Journal '' Navapur is a poultry hub which houses 27 poultry farms with total 9,75,000 hens. Till Monday samples collected from eight came bird flu posi-tive. On Tuesday, reports of samples from another eight poultry farms came posi-tive. The district adminis-tration is closely monitor-ing and samples from re-maining 11 poultry farms have also been sent for test-ing.''

Dr Bharud said about 5.50 lakh hens are expected to be culled in the coming days.

As reported by Free Press Journal, the district ad-ministration has deployed special teams to carry out such a large scale culling.

Meanwhile, a total of 1291 birds comprising 1266 poul-try birds have been found dead in Maharashtra due to avian influenza. So far 206441 poultry birds, 44,980 eggs and 64,639 kg poultry feed have been destroyed from infected zones.

Electric vehicles are taking over the streets; be it buses, cars or auto rickshaws. The buses taking its total to 125 buses and has setup charg-ing stations. The railways are setting up charging sta-tions for these e-vehicles outside railway stations and even battery swapping facil-ities. However, the Trans-port Department and RTOs are worried about the in-creasing use of e-bikes that are coming up across the city which is now seen at Bandra, Kurla and Bandra-Kurla Complex. In fact these e-bike services are expected to be extended to the other parts of city and suburbs in

a week's time.

The difference between other modes of electric ve-hicles and e-bikes is not in its system but in the Act governing them. At present, the e-bikes are considered as non-motorised transport which doesn't fall under the Motor Vehicles Act. The of-ficers from Regional Trans-port Offices said that intheir meetings and discus-sions with other govern-ment bodies; they have dis-cussed about these e-bikes moving around and plans are in place to extend its services to other parts of the city and suburbs as well.

The problem here is that people riding them zip through the traffic like a regular two wheeler. "Two wheeler accidents remain to be a big concern as bikers comprise of 41 percent of total deaths from road acci-dents. And these e-bikes don't have the necessary protective gears and people ride around with ease even in traffic," said a RTO offi-cer. "We are working on amendments in Rules as far as non-motorised vehicles are concerned."

Can't say 5-yr-old not aware of bad touch: Court

A special court designated under the Protection of Chil-dren from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act while denying bail to a South Mumbai resi-dent on Saturday, has said in its order, that it cannot be said that since the victim is a small girl five years old, she is not aware about good touch and bad touch.

Special POCSO Judge Bharti Kale said the victim and applicant are neigh-bours. The victim has cate-gorically stated that the ap-plicant has touched her body and she felt that it was a bad touch. "The victim being a small girl it cannot be said that she is not aware about good touch and bad touch," Judge Kale said.

The court further said that the victim is aged only five years and the applicant al-legedly committed the of-fence when the victim used to go to his house to play with her friend. "I find the nature of accusations seri-ous and the applicant is al-leged to have committed ag-gravated sexual assault," it stated while saying he is en-titled for bail.

The man had sought bail stating that he had never touched the child. The Mal-abar Hill police had opposed his bail and argued that the child though very young was aware of the nature of touch.

As per the complaint, the child had stated that the man had touched her on the chest, back and also used to kiss her when she would go to his home.
