In the 2021 edition of their annual - The Global M2M/IoT Communications Market report - market research firm Berg Insight confirms Telenor's position as a top 3 IoT connectivity provider in Europe and a top 10 provider worldwide by volume.

According to the new report, the global number of cellular IoT subscribers increased by 12 percent during 2020 to reach 1.7 billion - despite the negative impact from the Covid-19 pandemic. By 2025, Berg Insight predicts that there will be almost 4 billion IoT devices connected to cellular networks worldwide.

The regional markets Western Europe and North America recorded the highest growth rates during 2020. China domestic is the world's largest market for cellular IoT connectivity services by volume with North America and Western Europe rank as the second and third largest markets.

Telenor is amongst the top ten global mobile operators who collectively supply 86 percent of total connections in the world, of which the majority (87%) are accounted for by the three top Chinese operators. Telenor is the only Nordic mobile operator appearing in the top ten list in this report.

The connected car is currently one of the strongest trends with around 70 percent of new cars sold featuring embedded cellular connectivity in the regions. Other key application areas are fleet management of commercial vehicles, smart utility metering and monitored alarm systems.

Telenor Connexion CEO, Mats Lundquist, says: "It is rewarding to see that we are continually recognized as one of the top IoT operators in the world- despite harsh competition and the ongoing pandemic. It is also very positive that many of our key target market verticals continue to grow as this creates a continued positive situation for our customers."
