New TED app for Optik TV offers riveting talks by remarkable people

Vancouver, B.C. - TELUS announced today that TED, the nonprofit known for "Ideas Worth Spreading" is now available on Optik TV.

"TELUS is pleased to be associated with TED, one of the smartest innovation brands in the world today," said David Fuller, TELUS Chief Marketing Officer. "Customers want variety with their programming and we are going to feed their natural curiosity with the new TED app on Optik."

The new TED app provides Optik TV customers the opportunity to experience the most creative and compelling ideas of our time on a wide variety of topics in the way only TED can deliver. Not only will TED's full library be accessible through the app, but also each day TED releases a new talk, it will be available instantly on Optik TV.

With the TED app on Optik TV, users have an easy way to watch TED and discover new TED content delivered directly to their TVs. TED fans can easily browse their favourite speakers and subject matter, as well as keep track of talks they've watched.

"Having recently announced that TED 2014 'The Next Chapter' is coming to Vancouver, we could not be more excited about partnering with TELUS to bring talks to television for Optik users across Canada," said Deron Triff, TED's Director of Distribution. "TED Talks on Optik creates an amazing experience to explore new ideas that are shaping the world around us."

TELUS is committed to offering our customers great value and choice. Optik TV offers more than 600 channels, including more than 145 in HD and now includes all their corresponding HD channels for no extra charge.

TELUS customers also enjoy Optik Smart Remote, enabling them to surf through content choices on their phone or tablet instead of the traditional guide on the TV. You can spend less time channel surfing by using guide filters to show only what you're looking to find. By linking your mobile device with your digital set top box, you can use swipes on your iPhone, iPad or iPod Touch to change the channel. You can track your favourite shows or see what is most popular. You can also navigate the interactive program guide on your mobile device without interrupting a moment of your show and, when you find something you want to watch, open up the show information panel and get even more program related information from sources like IMDb, Wikipedia and YouTube.

With Optik TV, TELUS customers can even use their Xbox 360 as a digital box. TELUS is the first TV provider in the world to offer voice and gesture navigation on both live and recorded TV when connected to a Kinect for Xbox 360.

About TED
TED is a nonprofit organization devoted to Ideas Worth Spreading. Started as a four-day conference in California almost 30 years ago, TED has grown to support those world-changing ideas with multiple initiatives. The two annual TED Conferences invite the world's leading thinkers and doers to speak for 18 minutes. Many of these talks are then made available, free, at TED.com. TED speakers have included Bill Gates, Jane Goodall , Elizabeth Gilbert, Sir Richard Branson, Nandan Nilekani , Philippe Starck, Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, Sal Khan and Daniel Kahneman. The annual TED Conference will come to Vancouver in March of 2014, along with TEDActive in Whistler. The annual TEDGlobal conference is held each summer in Edinburgh, Scotland.

TED's media initiatives include TED.com, where new TED Talks are posted daily; the Open Translation Project, which provides subtitles and interactive transcripts as well as translations from volunteers worldwide; the educational initiative TED-Ed, and TEDBooks, short e-books on powerful ideas. TED has established the annual TED Prize, where exceptional individuals with a wish to change the world get help translating their wishes into action; TEDx, which supports individuals or groups in hosting local, self-organized TED-style events around the world, and the TED Fellows program, helping world-changing innovators from around the globe to amplify the impact of their remarkable projects and activities.
