THE NEW ITALY-TUNISIA CONNECTION TO CITIZENS

On 27 July, a digital "Terna Meets" event will be held with citizens of Castelvetrano, Campobello di Mazara and Partanna, in the province of Trapani, on the invisible energy bridge between Italy and Tunisia

substation on the Cape Bon peninsula in Tunisia

Rome, 20 July 2021 - On 27 July at 17:00, Terna will present citizens of Castelvetrano, Campobello di Mazara and Partanna with the results of public consultation on the new Italy-Tunisia connection, an invisible energy bridge that will connect the two large European and African electricity systems.

Due to Covid-19 restrictions, the company will organise a digital "Terna Meets" event.

Through dialogue and direct engagement with local communities affected by proposed routes for the new connection, Terna has listened to opinions and proposals of citizens in the municipalities of Castelvetrano, Campobello di Mazara and Partanna (all in the province of Trapani), which have been able to interact with Terna planners and technicians.

The new underground and undersea electricity connection between Italy and Tunisia is a Project of Community Interest (PCI) that will help Sicily to become a European energy hub for the management of energy flows, particularly from renewables.

The infrastructure will link the electrical substation in Partanna to a corresponding substation in Tunisia, on the Cape Bon peninsula.

The underground power line will have a continuous current of 600 MW and will be connected to the Italian electricity grid with a converter substation that will stand alongside the existing Partanna substation. From Partanna to the coast there will be an underground cable running along existing road routes, without altering the landscape and coastal landing areas. The new substation will also be created using architecture and colours that fit with the landscape and will be appropriately concealed with natural vegetation.
