(2 June 2016) The Hong Kong and China Gas Company Limited (Towngas) was honoured with the Gold Award in Manufacturing Sector of "Bank of China (Hong Kong) Limited (BOCHK) Corporate Environmental Leadership Awards" at the 2015 Prize Presentation and 2016 Launching Ceremony held today in recognition of our contribution to improving the environment in the region. The "BOCHK Corporate Environmental Leadership Awards" were presented by The Federation of Hong Kong Industries and BOCHK.

The Awards aim to promote environmental practices among the manufacturing and service enterprises in Hong Kong and the Pan Pearl River Delta region to reduce environmental pollution in these areas. Judging criteria for the environmental projects from participating enterprises includes comprehensiveness, energy conservation and carbon emission reduction, innovation, management involvement and sense of responsibility, pollution management, sustainability as well as impact to the community. This Gold Award manifests that the Company's efforts to protect the environment has gained fruitful results and won public recognition.

Towngas Managing Director Alfred Chan said, "Towngas is always committed to environmental protection. We not only use clean natural gas and low-sulphur naphtha as the feedstock for town gas production, but also turn waste into energy and utilise landfill gas as heating fuel in production process in order to reduce the emission of greenhouse gases and improve air quality.

Furthermore, we make use of old cast iron pipe as the host pipe for renewing gas pipes by the trenchless technology, thus reducing time and cost of the construction works while avoiding waste generation and carbon emission by 90 and 60 per cent respectively. We have also installed oil-free variable speed water-cooled chillers at North Point headquarters which helps lower electricity consumption of chiller system by 46.5 per cent, i.e. saving more than 1,000,000 kwh every year."

Towngas strives to maximise usage of renewable energy. Construction of landfill gas utilisation facilities at Tseung Kwan O South East New Territories Landfill will be completed in 2016. It is expected that the project can reduce emission of carbon dioxide by 56,000 tonnes per year, equivalent to the planting of 2.4 million tree seedlings.

The use of trenchless technology significantly minimises the impact of pipe-laying on the environment and community.
