TOHOKU ELECTRIC POWER CO., INC.
May 26, 2015
Electricity Supply & Demand Report for April 2015 1. Electricity demand (See Table 1)
Electric power sold in April totaled 6,315GWh, which was 99.8% year-on-year. Despite a continuous post-quake reconstruction, the sales were below the results of the previous year for three consecutive months mainly due to a decreased heating demand caused by a higher temperature.
Sales by customer segment were as follows.
- Non-Specified Scale Demand (Excluding deregulated segment)
Since the electricity demand was increased by a continuous post-quake reconstruction and a longer period of meter reading in spite of a decreased heating demand due to a higher temperature, our power demand in the lighting (residential) sector was 102.2% year-on-year which exceeded the results of the previous year for the first time in three months.
Non-specified scale demand in total was 102.2% year-on-year.
- Specified Scale Demand (Deregulated segment)
Our electric power sold for commercial use was 98.0% year-on-year. Even with a continuing recovery trend in demand, a decreased heating demand caused by a higher temperature and other factors lowered the demand for commercial use from that of the previous year for three consecutive months.
Overall power demand in the specified-scale sectors totaled 98.4% year-on-year.
In the industrial and other sectors, power demand mostly came from large-scale industrial customers, as described in the reference below.

- Large-scale industrial demand
Despite a post-quake reconstruction and a continuous recovery of production in some sectors, regular maintenance of facilities in some companies and other factors lowered our large-scale industrial demand in total. As a result, our large-scale industrial demand was 98.2% year-on-year.
Our electricity generated and purchased in April totaled 6,382GWh, 98.7% year-on-year, which fell below that of the previous year for four consecutive months.
(Power generated by our own hydro power stations)
Our hydro power generated output totaled 968GWh, a year-on-year increase of 64GWh, owing to the high water flow rate of 113.5%, which was 6.9% higher than that of previous year.
(Power generated by our own thermal power stations)
Differences in thermal power stations' operations and other factors decreased our own thermal power generated output to 3,736GWh, a year-on-year decrease of 786GWh.
(Power generated by our own nuclear power stations)
All units of Onagawa nuclear power station and unit 1 of Higashidori nuclear power station have been shut down because of regular inspection. Therefore, there was no generated output from nuclear power stations.
(Power generated by our own renewable power stations)
Since the amount of vapor in geothermal power stations increased, generated output totaled 82GWh, a year-on-year increase of 10GWh.
(Power purchased)
Differences in thermal power stations' operation of other companies and other factors increased our power purchased from others to 1,895GWh, a year-on-year increase of 289GWh.
