Cellulosic Biomass Technology Co., Ltd. (CBT)

A total of 28 officials including the House of Representatives of Thailand belonging to the Standing Committee of Science, Technology, Research and Innovation of Thailand, subcommittee members (bureaucrats, university lecturers, and experts in the private sector), and Dr. Pun-Arj Chairatana, executive director of National Innovation Agency, visited CBT in Udon Thani Province, Thailand, on December 3, 2021.

CBT is engaged in research and development of cellulosic sugar and related products from sugarcane bagasse. The Thai government positions Bio-Circular-Green (BCG) economic policies as the national strategy after the COVID-19 pandemic subsides, and CBT was chosen for a company inspection as a model case.

A video message from Toray Industries, Inc. President Akihiro Nikkaku was aired in the beginning, which received loud applause, marking the start of the inspection. Subsequently, Masahide Matsumura, Toray's chief representative for Thailand, Masahiro Kimura, managing director of CBT, and Tatsuya Matsuno, CBT general manager of Udonthani Plant, explained the business of CBT and conducted a plant tour.

We conveyed to the visitors that we operate the one and only process in the world that combines Toray's biotechnology and nano-order membrane technology, and is an innovative technology that creates new values of cellulosic sugar, oligosaccharide and polyphenol from bagasse, and the participants showed very strong interest in it. In the Q&A session, the participants engaged in lively discussions regarding expectations on the technology's synergy effects with agriculture, the strength of Thailand, and spread of the technology with biomass as raw material.

CBT will continue to press forward full-fledged commercialization through various collaborations with the industry, government, and academia.
