The International Energy Agency's (IEA) recently published data update highlights that renewable energy sources are now the second largest source of electricity production across the globe, accounting for 22.3 percent of world electricity generation in 2014.

Coal remains the number one producer of the world's electricity, whilst natural gas dropped to third, attributed to the increasing production of renewable energy.

The research revealed that world production of renewable energy grew 2.6 percent between 2013 and 2014, reaching 1,894 Mtoe by the end of 2014.

This recent data follows on from the impressive numbers for the global wind market published by the Global Wind Energy Council in April 2016, which show the global cumulative wind installed capacity reaching 433 GW at the end of 2015.

The IEA suggests overall growth in electricity generation continues to be driven by non-OECD countries. Its latest statistics, which show world electricity generation increasing by 2.9 percent between 2012 and 2013, also reveal that electricity generation is leveling off within the OECD, whilst rising strongly in the rest of the world. Additionally, in 2011, non-OECD countries for the first time produced more electricity than members of the OECD.
