January 9, 2014 HONG KONG -- Cree, Inc. (Nasdaq: CREE) announces that Hong Kong-based Lighthouse Technologies Ltd. is now deploying Cree® high-brightness surface-mount-device (SMD) LEDs in its LED outdoor displays. Displays developed for the permanent installation market by Lighthouse Technologies and featuring Cree CLV6 and CLX6 SMD LEDs are meeting the display needs of a variety of outdoor venues where long viewing distances are required, including sports arenas, outdoor digital signage, advertising billboards, shopping malls and theme parks.

"Lighthouse is the first company to launch an outdoor display based on SMD LEDs, and we chose the outstanding Cree CLV6 and CLX6 SMD LEDs for our Impact series of display products," commented Peter Chan, managing director, Lighthouse Technologies." Lighthouse has become a leader in the global outdoor LED display market thanks to SMD LED technology from Cree. We have successfully developed breakthrough, full-color outdoor video displays using the Cree SMD LEDs, helping us secure project wins in the U.S."

The CLV6 and CLX6 high-performance tricolor SMD LEDs offer numerous advantages for outdoor displays, and particularly for outdoor signage applications that utilize full-color video. Not only are these SMD LEDs water-resistant (IPX8-compliant), their encapsulation resin contains UV inhibitors to minimize the effects of long-term exposure to direct sunlight, resulting in a stable light output over the life of the LED. In addition, their matte-black surface reduces reflected sunlight and enhances contrast while delivering the highest-intensity green color at up to 2100 millicandela (mcd) at 20 mA. Their viewing angle is a wide 120 degrees, enhancing visibility for an outdoor audience. These SMD LEDs are also lead-free and RoHS-compliant, in PLCC6 packaging.

These advantages add up to a level of enhanced performance that benefits LED display customers seeking to optimize the viewing impact of their outdoor displays. A case in point is a recent installation by Lighthouse Technologies where Cree CLV6 SMD LEDs illuminated a large outdoor display at Safeco Field in Seattle, Wash., home of the Seattle Mariners Major League Baseball team. The Lighthouse Impact 16 display is an outstanding addition to the fan experience. The 1080p by 3840p LED video screen-the equivalent of two side-by-side high-definition screens-has over 4 million pixels, which is the largest in Major League Baseball.

Other recent project wins by Lighthouse Technologies include Dodger Stadium in Los Angeles, Calif., LP Field in Nashville, Tenn., and a number of college facilities. "Cree has helped change the industry by designing weather-resistant, outdoor SMDs that enable high-resolution exterior LED displays that are every bit as good and reliable as any indoor venue LED video screen," commented Jerry Cifarelli, President and Chief Executive Officer of ANC Sports Enterprises.

"We are very pleased with what we have been able to achieve in cooperation with Lighthouse Technologies," said Er Zhuang Liu, general manager, high-brightness LEDs, Cree. "We hope to build on that success and continue to meet the needs of a potentially large market for outdoor displays that combine high quality, full-color video with large- to giant-size formats, where our high-brightness SMD LEDs have proven to be a leading solution."
