The world of freight and logistics, like most industries, is working towards being more sustainable and reducing carbon emissions. The UK government has announced funding to see zero-emission vessels sailing by 2025. The Zero Emission Vessels and Infrastructure (ZEVI) competition will see innovative companies apply for funding, which must be used exclusively to decarbonise maritime technologies, both on board and shoreside.

This £77 million investment will create thousands of new skilled jobs and will also help new and innovative tech ideas to become reality ensuring UK waters will be home to greener cargo ships, ferries and cruise liners within the next few years. The government is also calling on UK universities to join together in establishing a 'Clean Maritime Research Hub' with £7.4 million in government funding.

Types of technologies which we could see being used for greener maritime vessels are battery electric vessels, shoreside electrical power, ships running on low carbon fuels like hydrogen or ammonia, and wind-assisted ferries.

This investment solidifies the UK government's commitment to emission free maritime travel and the aim to hit the target of 1.5 degree temperature set by the Paris Agreement. This serves as a milestone in the wider plan set out in the Department for Transport's March 2022 'UK Shipping Office for Reducing Emissions (UK SHORE)' project, whereby £206 million of funding was founded to aid research into the development of clean maritime technologies and create skilled jobs in the process.
