While labor shortages have been a nightmare for employers, they are opening doors for job seekers. But not all states are seeing the same increases in wages and benefits, relaxations in job requirements, and expansions in flexible and remote opportunities. Labor market dynamics vary dramatically from state to state. While some are job seekers' markets, others remain employers' markets.
ZipRecruiter ranked states based on labor market competitiveness data. We considered job openings rates, hires rates, and the number of unemployed people per job opening-proxies for opportunity and job seeker bargaining power.
1. Georgia
Georgia is at the top of our list with the highest job openings rate of 8.6% and forth-highest hires rate of 5.7%. There are currently 2.9 job openings per unemployed person in the state. The state has only 146K unemployed people (18.7% fewer than before the pandemic) with a 2.8% unemployment rate-one of the lowest unemployment rates in the country and the series low for the state. Labor force participation in the Peach State is lower than the national average, but it has increased by more than 2 percentage points over the past year, at a time when it was sluggish nationwide.
2. Montana
Montana is the first runner up with a job openings rate of 8% and hires rate of 5.2%, higher than the national average. The state currently has 2.7 job openings per unemployed person as of November 2021, a sharp increase from prior month's rate of 2 openings per unemployed. The state has hit the lowest unemployment rate of 2.8% in its history, with only 15.4K thousand unemployed people-a sharp decrease from the previous month's number of 16.9K.
3. Kentucky
Kentucky takes the third prize with the second highest job openings rate of 8.4% and a hires rate of 5.1%, both well above the national averages. There are 2.1 job openings per unemployed person in the state, as of November. The state has an unemployment rate of 4.1%, which is similar to the national rate of 4.2%, with only 81.6K unemployed people, 5.5% fewer than before the pandemic.
