Introduction
With our buildings and properties we shape the way people live for generations to come. We focus not only on new transformation projects such as the living space at Metalli, but also maintain existing areas and prop- erties. In recent months, we have also taken many measures to improve the quality of the shared and exterior areas of the Suurstoffi site in Rotkreuz. This includes redesigning the spaces and promoting biodi- versity through the creation of natural patches and construction of stone and deadwood piles.
Dialogue with local residents indicated a strong interest in ecological and social issues concerning the Metalli living space project. While solutions to key environmental issues such as biodiversity, lower greenhouse gas emissions, and a circular economy are increasingly gaining attention, the interpretation of the topic of social sustainability remains vague. Zug Estates intends to increasingly address these aspects (mix of uses, quality of stay, social mix) with a view to creating sustainable and diverse living spaces for members of society today and tomorrow.
The core of our sustainability strategy remains the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions. Despite the acquisition of the Renggli portfolio as of 1 October 2022 that still relies largely on fossil energy sources, greenhouse gas emissions of 0.9 kg per m2 of energy reference area (Scopes 1 and 2) are at the previous year's level and thus still well below the industry average. The acquisition-related increase was compensated by savings in the city centre site/Metalli, where the last properties (except the Bären restaurant), Haldenstrasse 9-16 and the City Garden Hotel, were connected to the Circulago lake-water energy district.
The discussion around grey energy and the aspects of the circular economy in the construction of buildings is gaining in importance. Zug Estates is pursuing ambitious goals in this area and wants to promote a dialogue in the industry. To this end, we signed the "Re- use-Oriented Construction Charter" with eleven other large companies and organisations in June 2023.
