GRDF, GRTgaz, the Syndicate of Renewable Energies (SER), SPEGNN and Terega publish the fifth edition of the Panorama du Gaz Renouvelable, an annual inventory of a booming renewable sector which experienced almost a doubling between 2018 and 2019.

The quantity of renewable gas injected into the networks exceeds the threshold of TWh in 2019

Biomethane injection has been characterized by strong momentum for more than five years. 2019 confirms this trend with the commissioning of 47 new sites in France, which brings the number of installations connected to French gas networks to 123 at the end of 2019. The quantities of biomethane injected into the networks have again almost doubled compared to in 2018 to exceed the symbolic threshold of TWh and reach 1,235 GWh 1, the equivalent of the annual consumption of nearly 103,000 homes. The maximum annual injection capacity of all production sites reached 2,157 GWh at the end of 2019, compared to 1,206 GWh at the end of 2018.

Multiple solutions to benefit the attractiveness of the regions

The injection of green gas provides a response to climatic, socio-economic, agroeconomic challenges and is, in particular, part of the principle of circular economy. The biomethane sector provides many services to the territories: local recovery of waste, resilience of agricultural activity, decarbonization of the energy and agricultural sectors, return to the soil of the digestate as a natural fertilizer, creation of local jobs. The increase in skills of players in the value chain, the structuring and the professionalization of the sector made it possible to reach more than 4,000 direct and indirect jobs in 2018 and a turnover of 695 million euros 2. The biomethane sector alone can create on average 3 to 4 local jobs that cannot be relocated per installation, solely for operation and maintenance. In addition, renewable gas contributes to the energy independence of our country with the sustainable production of renewable energy, which can be stored in networks, and produced near consumption areas.
