Equinor ASA (EQNR.OS) said Wednesday that oil was observed on the sea surface this morning as it was loading oil to a shuttle tanker on the North Sea Statfjord field.
When the discovery was made, loading operations were stopped and loading systems shut down, it said.
"Efforts have been initiated to map the extent of the oil observed on the sea surface," the company said in a statement.
Equinor's emergency response organization has been mobilized and authorities notified.
Equinor is operator of the Statfjord field, which has been developed with three production platforms. Oil produced from the field is loaded into shuttle tankers on the field and shipped to a number of ports in north-western Europe.
