Symantec Announces New Threat Aware Data Protection Capabilities To Help Guard Against Malicious, Data-Stealing Apps

Integration of Symantec Data Loss Prevention and Endpoint Protection Helps Customers Stop Fake Apps and Malware from Leaking Sensitive Information

MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif. - February 27, 2019 - Symantec Corp., a global leader in cyber security, today announced new data loss prevention capabilities that make it easier for customers to protect confidential data from malicious, data-stealing apps and help meet regulatory compliance requirements.

Security teams are fighting to keep data safer from a growing number of fake apps disguised to look like legitimate apps that sneak onto users' computers. Employees often unwittingly enable these threats by installing unauthorized apps such as PDF splitters and mergers, calculators, video capture and editing tools, and more. In addition, cyber criminals are targeting companies with sophisticated malware that can exploit security gaps and exfiltrate sensitive information such as customers' personal data and trade secrets.

Symantec Threat Aware Data Protection helps solve these issues for customers by integrating Data Loss Prevention and Endpoint Protection technologies to defend against stealth data theft by malicious, suspicious and unknown apps. Powered by Symantec's Global Intelligence Network - the world's largest civilian threat database - Threat Aware Data Protection helps stop apps from seizing control of devices and stealing sensitive information without disrupting employees' productivity.

Symantec Data Loss Prevention (DLP) detects and monitors data on users' computers by leveraging advanced machine learning and fingerprinting capabilities to accurately classify data. Combining this data visibility with a broad and deep understanding of evolving threats enables organizations to uncover hidden endpoint dangers that can expose them to even greater data breach risks. Symantec Endpoint Protection (SEP) detects malicious and untrusted apps by going beyond signature blocking to combine signatureless technologies (such as advanced machine learning and behavior analysis) with time-tested ones including file reputation analysis. By combining DLP and SEP, customers can now stop malicious and untrusted apps before they can compromise confidential data.

Data Loss Prevention 15.5 features include:

  • DLP Integration with Endpoint Protection - Helps stop malicious, suspicious or unknown apps from seizing control of users' endpoints and stealing sensitive corporate data such as intellectual property and PII.
  • Exact Matching Data Identifier - A powerful new data fingerprinting capability that provides highly accurate, secure and efficient discovery of indexed data on every data loss channel, including endpoints.
  • Data Classification Controls - Automatically classifies data on endpoints and suggests classification levels to users as they tag newly-created content via DLP's integration with Symantec Information Centric Tagging.
  • Expanded DLP Integration with Information Centric Encryption - Automatically applies encryption and digital rights to sensitive files and folders when users upload them to web browsers via DLP's integration with Symantec Information Centric Encryption.
  • Expanded On-Premises and Cloud App Coverage - New on-premises app support for Microsoft Skype for Business with the Symantec DLP API Detection Appliance. Expanded cloud app support for Amazon S3, Cisco Spark and Slack via DLP's integration with Symantec CloudSOC CASB.

'Trusted applications can be compromised by zero-days and malware that have become significantly more dangerous and harder to detect. Hackers are devising more sophisticated programs capable of hiding malicious payloads in benign productivity apps to infiltrate corporate networks,' said Mario Espinoza, vice president of Product Management at Symantec. 'By integrating DLP and SEP, we're providing our customers with threat aware data protection to stop compromised apps before they can exfiltrate sensitive data.'
