Volkswagen AG said Friday it will expand its supervisory board to eight people due to the growing workload caused by recent legislation requirements.

Two new additions, Hans Michel Piech, indirectly the largest individual Volkswagen shareholder, and Bertina Murkovic, a representative of the employees, will join the Executive Committee of the Supervisory Board, bringing the total to eight members.

"The reason for the expansion is increasing duties and responsibilities," the German car maker said.

Recent legislation such as the Act Implementing the Second Shareholder Rights Directive and the amended German Corporate Governance Code has significantly increased the committee's workload, said Volkswagen.

Volkswagen's board also consists of Chairman Hans Dieter Poetsch, Deputy Chairman Joerg Hofmann, Wolfgang Porsche, Stephan Weil, Bernd Osterloh and Peter Mosch.
