Chennai flooded as cyclone Michaung hits south India

STORY: Around a dozen people, most of them in the manufacturing hub of Tamil Nadu, died in flooding triggered by torrential rains that preceded cyclone Michaung, which made landfall in Andhra Pradesh state on Tuesday (December 5) afternoon.

Residents were seen distributing water on boats to those stranded in their homes, as roads were flooded and vehicles submerged.

The floods triggered memories of similar rains in Chennai eight years ago which killed 290 people, as some activists questioned whether the city's infrastructure could handle extreme weather events.
