Daylight reveals destruction after China earthquake

STORY: Footage broadcasted on state television CCTV showed some buildings and homes reduced to rubble, including one where a child's textbook was seen amongst the destruction. The quake killed at least 127 people, according to state media.

Mudslides were also seen covering roads and buildings, as rescue efforts were working to prevent secondary disasters caused by factors beyond the quake due to the area's high altitude and cold weather.

The quake struck Jishishan county in China's northwestern province of Gansu at 11:59 p.m. local time (1559 GMT) on Monday (December 18) at a depth of 10 km (6.2 miles), according to China Earthquake Networks Center (CENC).
