Health-care companies fell, but not by as much as the broad market, as traders positioned for growth in drug and device sales this year.

Shares of medical-device maker Medtronic rose after it reported fiscal third-quarter operating earnings ahead of Wall Street estimates. Obesity drug makers Eli Lilly and Novo Nordisk slipped, but remained significantly higher for the year to date.
