Acron Group, a Russian vertically integrated mineral fertiliser producer, is upgrading Urea Units 1 to 4 at its Veliky Novgorod production facility at a total cost of USD 80 million.

When completed in 2025, the project will increase urea output from 2,050 to 3,100 tpd. The general designer of the project is Acron Engineering Research and Design Centre.

The project includes the construction of a new synthesis, distillation and compression shop and ancillary engineering facilities. The four synthesis units will operate under a single production process and will be controlled from the central control room.

Alexander Popov, Chairman of Acron's Board of Directors, said: 'Urea is one of the most in-demand products in the market. The upgraded production facility will not only have higher capacity, but will also be more environmentally friendly and energy efficient. As liquid urea production increases, the Company will give the go-ahead for the design of a new urea granulation unit. At the same time, we are exploring options to increase the capacity of the existing prilling tower'.

Urea production at Acron's Veliky Novgorod site has been the driving force behind the Company's development over the past decade. Acron currently operates six urea units. Units 1-4 were commissioned in 1969-1972 and later expanded to an annual capacity of 730,000 tonnes. In 2012, the Company commissioned the 350,000-tpa Urea-5 unit, which was later upgraded to 515,000 tpa. This year, Acron completed a major overhaul of Urea-6 unit, increasing its capacity to 2,650 tpd. Two 700,000-tpa granulation units were put into operation in 2020 and 2023. Today, the total production capacity exceeds 2 mtpa, making Acron the largest urea producer in Europe.
