ACS Group, through the consortium led by Tedagua, and where it also participates the French constructor Eiffage Génie Civil, has been selected for the execution of the EPC contract (Engineering, Procurement, and Construction) of a seawater desalination plant located in Doraleh. This project will improve the procurement of drinking water to Djibouti City, capital of the Republic equally named and located in the so-called Horn of Africa. The project is budgeted in EUR 46 million, of which EUR 5.5 million will be financed by the State of Djibuti while the remaining EUR 40.5 million will be financed by the European Union (EU), as part of the EU initiative Sustainable Energy for All. The main target is to build a reverse osmosis desalination plant with an initial capacity of 22,500 m3 per day, with civil works infrastructure designed for a future enlargement up to 45,000 m3 per day. It also includes a regulation tank with a capacity of 5,000 m3 and a pipeline of 8.5 Km with diameter 700 mm that will connect the plant with the city's drinking water distribution network. Works will begin this year and they will extend over the next three years. The contract also includes the exploitation, operation and maintenance of the facilities, for a period of five years. The new plant will procure drinking water to about 200,000 citizens in areas where there still exist important shortcomings between water supply and demand. The required power for the functioning of the plant, will be entirely procured by a wind farm to be built in the vicinities. This means that the energy cost will improve, and therefore, water prices. The contract, related to PEPER's project (Drinking Water Production through Desalination and Renewable Energies) of the European Commission (EC), was signed in presence of the Ministers for Economic Affairs and Finance, Ilyas Moussa Dawaleh, the Minister for Industry, Agriculture, Water, and Fisheries, Mohamed Ahmed Awaleh, the General Director of International Cooperation and Development of the European Union, Stefano Manservisi, and the European Union Ambassador in Djibouti, Adam Kulach.
