There are half a billion devices in use that can handle Amazon's talking assistant Alexa.

The use of that kind of listening and talking "Internet box" increased 35 percent last year.

Earlier this week, Amazon released another , ranging from home speakers to earbuds to a car kit.

While these types of devices are often used as glorified egg beaters, CEO Andrew Jassy believes he is perfectly pre-sorted for a leading role in the market with his digital assistant Alexa. That still requires some software work, though.

The appearance of language models such as ChatGPT and open source variants of it open up a world of new possibilities for Amazon. "We were always working with a language model, but are now building one that is much bigger, more capable and more general in terms of design. There is a significant revenue model behind that." What that revenue model would be, Jeff Bezos' successor still to himself.
