Apple has quietly acquired Canadian company DarwinAI. The Canadians develop AI technology for making neural networks more efficient.

In addition, Darwin makes AI technology for visually inspecting parts during a manufacturing process.

DarwinAI's websites and social media accounts have been taken offline following the acquisition by Apple. Dozens of former DarwinAI employees also transferred.

Apple confirmed the acquisition but did not elaborate on its purpose or plans.

Apple is reportedly in the process of testing large language models (Large Language Models) and plans to build generative AI features into iOS 18 and macOS 15. Those AI features will reportedly soon be found in Siri, Messages, Apple Music and other apps.

Apple CEO Tim Cook has already confirmed that Apple will announce major new features in generative AI in 2024.
