EUROPEAN regulators are set to whack Apple Music with an additional antitrust charge after rival Spotify's complaints about the tech giant.

Last year, the European Commission accused Apple of distorting competition in the streaming marketplace via restrictive rules for its App Store.

Spotify argued that developers were forced to use Apple's own in-app payment system, thereby preventing them from informing users of other purchasing options.

New charges are usually brought when a regulator has gathered fresh and compelling evidence to add to the case. Whilst sources told Reuters the iPhone maker was set to face additional charges in the coming weeks, the commentary around streaming hindering competition has been an ongoing debate.

The UK competition watchdog launched a probe into the music streaming market in January this year. Although the study is ongoing, it will focus on the roles played by record labels and streaming services.
