Work has started on a new physiotherapy department and gym in the community that will allow easier access and upgraded services for patients of the Royal Orthopaedic Hospital in Birmingham.

Following on from the official opening of our medical centre in Griffins Brook Lane in July last year, the NHS Foundation Trust continues to expand its service offering in the community.

The Royal Orthopaedic Hospital is relocating and upgrading physiotherapy services from the main hospital site on the Bristol Road, to College Green at Bournville, investing over £3.5m over the next 25 years in the community site.

30% of all primary care appointments are related to musculoskeletal conditions. Investing at the new location in the community at College Green means that a full range of state-of-the-art physiotherapy services will be easier for patients to access, and free up space at the existing hospital location for future redevelopment.

Encompassing physiotherapy gym services and clinical rooms, as well as a dedicated paediatrics area, the new physiotherapy space is scheduled to open in early 2023.

Nikki Mason, Head of Therapy Services at the Royal Orthopaedic Hospital, said: "We are very excited that work has started on site at our new physiotherapy department. We are working with specialist healthcare contractors to bring this project to life. The ROH is a musculoskeletal (MSK) specialist, focussed on recovery and wellness. The new flexible location will encompass a gym and exercise space to support rehabilitation, creating a fantastic environment for patient recovery and for colleagues to work in, as well as a dedicated paediatric space to support our younger patients."

Relocating the services to the community will mean that patients can be treated in a specialist area away from the main hospital site, with parking and public transportation nearby.

Current therapy staff from the Royal Orthopaedic Hospital will move over to the new site.
