Shares of industrial and transportation companies fell after a growth warning from Delta Air Lines and mixed wholesale inflation data.

The producer price index, which tracks wholesale price trends, fell 0.1% from a month earlier.

The Delta profit warning was the culmination of woes that have plagued the aerospace sub-sector since a mid-air malfunction on an Alaska Airlines Boeing 737 MAX jet last week. Federal air-safety regulators said that they would ramp up inspections of Boeing's factories after grounding roughly 170 Boeing jets in the wake of an emergency landing last week.

Tesla plans to halt production at its only large factory in Europe, in Germany, for two weeks because of a lack of parts -- one of the first major ripple effects from attacks on ships in the Red Sea.
