In a candid and inspirational discussion this week, Brookdale CEO Cindy Baier talked about being a leader when failure is not an option. Cindy appeared in a virtual moderated discussion at the Women Business Leaders of the U.S. Health Care Industry Foundation's (WBL) Annual Summit, speaking openly with moderator Mary Flipse, a former senior officer at Tivity Health.

Cindy started the session by encouraging everyone to get vaccinated against COVID-19 if they can, and shared the success that Brookdale is seeing in response to its vaccine clinic program!

She talked of Brookdale's approach to problem solving that led to accomplishments on behalf of the company's residents and associates. Cindy said, 'It's fair to say that we were relentless. Associates at Brookdale are relentless when it comes to overcoming barriers.' Because of this, Brookdale was able to solve a variety of problems and, essentially, transform the company. 'We reimagined the business model overnight. For example, we moved from communal dining to residents having their meals delivered to their rooms. We had to close our communities to visitors because, at the beginning, it wasn't safe to have visitors. We needed to figure out how to overcome every obstacle.'

Cindy fielded questions from the audience of healthcare executives related to Brookdale's business, leadership qualities, and preparing for the top job at a big company.

WBL is a nonprofit organization of female executives across the health care industry, with more than 3,500 of the nation's top women executives in the health care industry in their network.
