The U.K.'s communications regulator Ofcom on Wednesday outlined proposals for new rules to make it easier for consumers to switch broadband providers.

Under Ofcom's proposals, all residential customers would only have to contact their new provider to switch, it said. U.K. customers switching between different networks currently need to contact both their existing and new provider to coordinate the change, Ofcom said.

Ofcom said it has opened a consultation process on its proposals, which will close on March 31. The regulator aims to publish its decision in the summer and to introduce the new rules in December 2022.

In 2019, Ofcom already introduced rules that enabled mobile customers to switch operators by simply sending a text message.
