National Reconciliation Week is celebrated across Australia every year from 27 May - 3 June. These dates commemorate two significant milestones in the reconciliation journey-the anniversaries of the successful 1967 referendum and the High Court Mabo decision.

National Reconciliation Week is an opportunity for all of us to learn about our shared histories, cultures and achievements and join the national reconciliation effort. This year, the theme is 'It's time to change it up'.

The importance of 27 May and 3 June

27 May marks the anniversary of the 1967 referendum which saw 90% of Australians vote 'Yes' to give the Commonwealth Government the power to make laws for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and recognition on the national census.

3 June commemorates the 1992 landmark High Court Mabo decision which legally recognised that Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples have a unique connection with the land-that existed prior to British colonalisation and still exists today. This recognition paved the way for land rights and the passing of the Native Title Act 1993.

How you can get involved

In the last few years, there has been a push towards changing the Constitution to recognise First Australians in our nation's founding document.

National Reconciliation Week is the ideal time for you to get involved in the reconciliation journey. Join the Recognise Campaign or check out Reconciliation Australia's website for details of activities and events near you.
