Hydrogen Refueling of China's First High-power Hydrogen -powered Shunting Locomotive was Completed for the First Time

On July 23rd, hydrogen refueling and static test were carried out for China's first high-power hydrogen-powered shunting locomotive in heavy-haul railway, thereby marking a significant breakthrough in the research and application of high-power hydrogen energy power equipment for heavy-haul railway in China. In the context of the target for "Carbon Peaking and Carbon Neutrality", this is a useful exploration and successful practice to quicken the pace for heavy-haul railway to achieve green transformation of production pattern.

The hydrogen energy-powered shunting locomotive is driven under hybrid power of hydrogen fuel cell and lithium battery. The locomotive features the maximum power of 2,400 KW, the maximum starting traction force of 560 KN, the maximum traction load of 10,000 tons on straight roads, the hydrogen capacity of 5,880 L (about 137 KG), work duration of more than 12 hours with full-load hydrogen, the cruising range of 600 KM, and the locomotive design speed of 100 KM per hour. Up to now, it is the hydrogen energy-powered locomotive with the largest power, the largest traction force and the largest hydrogen capacity in the domestic heavy-haul railway.

A key scientific and technological research project of China Energy Investment Corporation (CHN Energy), namely, "Research, Development and Demonstration of Key Technology and Equipment for Hydrogen Energy Application in Heavy-haul Railway", is jointly undertaken by China Shenhua Xinshuo Railway Co., Ltd. and Guohua Energy Investment Co., Ltd.. With Xinshuo Railway as an application pilot, this project is dedicated to the development of long-life, high-reliability and high-power hydrogen-powered shunting locomotives and catenary operation vehicles. This research project is aimed to formulate hydrogen energy power equipment operation specifications and related technical standards, build the first set of safe, efficient and green hydrogen-powered equipment and technology systems for heavy-haul railways in China, and develop reliable, cost-effective and stable hydrogen energy supply chain solutions.
