Australia's largest PET recycling plant is now up and running. It will substantially reduce onshore plastic waste by recycling the equivalent of around one billion PET beverage bottles each year.

The AUD$45 million plant is a joint venture partnership between Pact Group, Cleanaway Waste Management Ltd, Asahi Beverages and CCEP. The project was supported with about AUD$5 million government funding. The partnership has also funded a second plant in Victoria, Australia, which is due to open in 2023.

The plant is helping to build a domestic circular economy, boosting the amount of locally sourced and recycled PET in Australia by two thirds. CCEP will buy recycled plastic from the facility to use in its packaging.

As well as reducing Australia's reliance on virgin plastic and recycled plastic imports, solar energy is used to power part of the facility, and a water treatment unit and rainwater tanks will reuse and recycle as much water on site as possible.
