ISA CTEEP Invests over R$ 17 million for preventing wildfires
Initiatives involve clearing vegetation from the company's right-of-way and an awareness campaign for the population

São Paulo, June 23, 2021 - ISA CTEEP, the largest private power transmission company in the country, is investing, over R$ 17 million this year in the prevention of wildfires close to the company's transmission networks, which can cause an interruption in the energy transmission network and harm the supply to consumers.

Fires and illegal wildfires are among the main causes of forced shutdowns in the power transmission network. When fire, smoke, and soot reach the transmission system, they can cause short circuits and interrupt the power supply, impacting for example hospitals and several critical establishments. Moreover, this can cause negative impacts to the environment, such as pollution, injury or death of animals, burning of ecological reserves, among others.

According to Decree 2,661, of July 1998, it is forbidden to set fire to a range of five meters from the safety limits of power transmission lines and 100 meters around the substations. Therefore, those failing to comply with the law are subject to the penalties provided for in the legislation.
'We operate in 17 states in Brazil and wildfires occur mainly in the countryside of São Paulo, where large outbreaks of fires are recorded, such as in sugar cane plantations. Therefore, in addition to our prevention initiatives, we count on the support of the population not to create fire outbreaks, due to all the risks of wildfires, not only for the operation of our assets, but also for the environment and for the people,' says Gabriela Desirê, ISA CTEEP's operations executive office.

Every year, the company carries out inspections in the right-of-way of the transmission lines to determine which areas will be cleared for conservation and to reduce the spreading of fire. Most of this service is performed before the dry season. Additionally, the company carries out an awareness campaign every year for the population to use other methods of pruning and cleaning the land, other than burning.

Aiming to prevent fires, the company prepared a series of tips, such as not lighting candles or campfires close to the vegetation; do not set fire to clean the area; do not throw cigarette butts; do not release balloons, among others. All tips can be accessed at the website (http://queimadas.isacteep.com.br/).
