Danieli MIDA QLP technology to operate also in Japan

Chiyoda Steel contracts Danieli for a major upgrade project to produce rebar in endless casting-rolling mode

Chiyoda Steel awarded a contract to Danieli for the supply of a new ladle furnace and new, single-strand caster, and the upgrade of the existing rolling mill to perform the Danieli QLP endless casting-rolling process at the Ayase plant in central Tokyo.

The upgraded plant will allow Chiyoda Steel to produce 430,000 tpy of rebar in bundles from 10- to 35-mm-diameter, in the most efficient way.

Characterized by the Danieli-patented Q-One power feeder, the new refining station will improve the productivity of the meltshop, also acting as a buffer for production scheduling.

The digital control of the arc provided by Q-One will guarantee the best performances at the minimum transformation costs.

Danieli-patented Octocaster, which is the core of the casting process, featuring the latest design of octagonal eco-power mold, will produce 165-mm octagon-shape billets (equivalent to 150x150 mm square) at a maximum speed of 6.3 m/min, ensuring stable, reliable, efficient endless casting-rolling.

The new ladle furnace, Octocaster and new overhead crane will be installed in the place of the existing billet reheating furnace and billet storage, without requiring any additional land.

The replacement of the reheating furnace with the MIDA QLP technology was approved and supported by subsidies.

The upgraded rolling mill will include six new, ESS cantilever stands followed by four new, housingless stands slitting the bar in two, for the existing fast-finishing blocks.

A new water-treatment plant for the minimill, featuring original DanFilters, to minimize the water waste is also part of the order.

Thanks to the Danieli endless casting-rolling process, which eliminates the need to reheat billets, Chiyoda Steel will produce rebar from liquid steel in less than 15 minutes, with zero direct-carbon emissions in the casting-rolling mill - the first in Japan.
