Making uninterrupted calls on the train and going online at 5 GB/s is what Deutsche Bahn, Ericsson, Telefónica and Vantage Towers are now testing.

The Gigabit Innovation Track pilot project for better mobile communications on the train is entering the next phase. On a 10-km route between Karow and Malchow in southern Mecklenburg, Deutsche Bahn (DB), network equipment supplier Ericsson, telecommunications provider Telefónica and radio mast operator Vantage Towers are testing mobile communications at gigabit data speeds along the tracks.

New masts close to the tracks, combinations of different radio units and antennas are being tested. The 13 Vantage Towers masts needed for this purpose should be able to be used jointly by the rail and mobile communications industries. The masts will be anchored into the ground with steel struts, eliminating the need to pour concrete foundations.

In the future, train passengers should be able to access the Internet undisturbed with minimal loading and response times. This should make train travel more attractive, according to a statement from DB. The project is financed by the Federal Ministry of Transport (BMDV) with 6.4 million euros.
