In the 1980s, the city of Osaka, Japan had a problem.

To stay competitive in the global market, Osaka needed to expand its international airport.

But in one of the largest, most populated cities in Japan, space was an issue. Noise pollution was an issue. The fact that the city was near mountains was an issue.

So how do you build an airport on land with all of those obstacles?

You don't.

In 1987, Japan started construction on a man-made island off the coast of Osaka and in 1994, the Kansai International Airport became the first international airport on its own island.

20 years later, FedEx opened the FedEx North Pacific Regional Hub at the Kansai International Airport, helping to connect commerce between the eastern and western worlds.

The 39,500 square meter facility operates 24 hours a day with direct flights to both the United States and Europe. It can sort 9,000 packages an hour and has a temperature controlled storage and handling area.

Take an inside look at the FedEx hub in Osaka, Japan.
