How does an air source heat pump work? 

Air source heat pumps work like a fridge, but in reverse. Mounted on a wall outside your home, they suck outside air into the system which turns a refrigerant inside the unit into vapour. This vapour is compressed and produces heat, which is used to heat the water in your radiators and your water tank.

Air source heat pumps are classed as a renewable energy technology. They use a small amount of electricity to run, but generate up to 3.5 times more energy to use as heat within your home.

How would an air source heat pump reduce my carbon emissions? 

Heating homes with gas is responsible for nearly 15% of the UK's total carbon emissions. What's more, gas boilers account for a fifth of nitrous oxide air pollution in urban areas. Decarbonising our heating is vital if we are to transition into a zero carbon economy and meet our climate targets.

Switching to a renewable, low carbon air source heat pump is one of the biggest single actions you can take to reduce your home's contribution to climate change - it can reduce your home's carbon footprint by up to 65%* and won't produce any nitrous oxide emissions either.

Heat pumps are an incredibly efficient way to heat your home, generating around 3.5 times more heat energy than they use to run - compared with a gas boiler that only turns 90% of the energy it uses into heat for your home. Because air source heat pumps are much more efficient, they can cost less to run than other household heating systems.

Electricity is a much lower-carbon form of energy than oil or gas. Last year in the UK, nearly 40% of the electricity on our grid was generated from renewable sources, and 15.5% was generated from low carbon nuclear power.

What's more, if your home is powered by a renewable energy supplier like Good Energy, heating your home using an air source heat pump would have zero carbon emissions.

What are the Government's targets for decarbonising heating?

The government has set challenging targets for heat pump installations to help the UK to meet its next milestone in the transition to a net zero economy. This would involve installing 600,000 heat pumps every year by 2028. At the moment an estimated 55,000 heat pumps are installed a year. From 2025, all new homes will have to have low carbon heating systems, and from 2035 sales of new gas or oil boilers will be banned.

Heat pumps are a tried and tested technology. In fact, they heat over 60% of homes in Norway, and are mainstream across Germany and Sweden too. In order to make them a financially comparable solution to getting a new traditional boiler installed, the Government have cut taxes on clean technologies, and introduced the Boiler Upgrade Scheme. The scheme provides grants of £5,000 towards the cost of installing a new air source heat pump, bringing the installation cost down to as little as £4,000.
