Grand Rapids, Mich. - Intertek, a leading Total Quality Assurance provider to industries worldwide, has been approved by Daimler to conduct testing of supplier materials for volatile organic compounds (VOCs), fogging and odors to the VDA 278 and 270 test methods. This approval gives manufacturers supplying parts to Daimler an independent third party to analyze a variety of interior materials and composites for emissions. With this approval, Intertek's lab in Grand Rapids now offers Daimler suppliers the broadest scope of emissions (VOC, fog, odor) and material performance testing solutions in North America.
Interior materials like textiles, carpets, films, plastics, adhesives, sealants, coatings, rubber, insulation and other materials often emit odors and VOCs or may cause fogging within the automobile. VDA 278 is an internationally accepted standardized method to evaluate non-metallic materials for VOC emissions, which come from certain solids and liquids and may contribute to both short-and long-term health hazards. VDA 270 evaluates materials for odor behaviors under the influence of temperature and humidity to ensure they do not produce undesirable scents. Nearly all interior materials used in a Daimler vehicle require testing to VDA 278 and 270 before they can be accepted. Because the evaluations are considered a Class A method, Daimler will only accept reports from pre-approved labs, like Intertek.
Tim Hubbard, Senior Vice President of Transportation Technologies at Intertek, said: 'Intertek's commitment has always been to provide the industries we serve with our Total Quality Assurance solutions to provide the industry and consumers with products that meet safety and quality standards. We are thrilled to have been approved by Daimler for this important testing and look forward to working with them and their suppliers to help improve product quality and safety in relation to VOCs, fogging and odors.'
