(Reston, Va.) April 21, 2016 -Leidos (NYSE: LDOS), a national security, health, and infrastructure company, announced it has been named Tech Innovator of the Year at the Northern Virginia Chamber of Commerce's Greater Washington Innovation Awards. This award recognizes a technology company that has created an inventive product or service that benefits the community.
Leidos was honored for its innovative virtual pharma model in developing vaccine prototypes for illnesses such as malaria and Zika. Through the company's unique approach, these prototypes can be developed quickly and efficiently to support global health efforts in countries where such diseases can proliferate.
Leidos' virtual pharma model does not operate laboratory space, but instead delivers support by integrating its scientific management, independent quality assurance, and regulatory affairs teams to act as scientific architects. After drafting a vaccine project, the company then uses a network of commercial biotech and university laboratories to bring together organizations, technologies, and subject matter experts to create new vaccine prototypes for clinical trial.
'The power of Leidos' virtual pharma approach is that it remains free from any one technology or laboratory, and instead seeks solutions that best suit the project at hand,' said Jim Pannucci, Leidos Director, Life Sciences. 'This award honors the hard work and dedication of our employees, whose efforts every day yield tangible results in our community.'
