SEPANG-Malaysia Airports would like to shed light on the contagious statement on various platforms and chat forums that have linked the existence of several COVID-19 variants in the country with the high number of passenger movements recorded in April 2021.

Our explanation is as follows:

1) The total passenger movements in April 2021 reported in all media and news agencies is the total for the Malaysia Airports group covering all airports under our operation in Malaysia as well as our wholly owned airport in Turkey which is Istanbul Sabiha Gokcen International Airport ( ISG). On a monthly basis, Malaysia Airports will issue a monthly report to report the amount and details of traffic movements for the previous month. This report is published and announced under the Company Announcements segment on the Bursa Malaysia Berhad website, as well as the Malaysia Airports website.

2) Details of passenger traffic for April 2021 are as in the table below:

Referring to the table above, the movement of passenger traffic in Malaysia is around 630,000, of which only around 107,000 are international passenger movements.

3) All airports in Malaysia remain operational throughout the enforcement period of the Movement Control Order (PKP) to ensure that rescue flights, repatriation of non -citizens as well as cargo in and out of Malaysia can be carried out. The total of 107,000 recorded for Malaysia is an international passenger movement for both arrival and departure movements. Among others, this includes the movement of foreign passengers returning to their own country, students flying to their institutions of higher learning abroad, Malaysian permanent residents who are spouses or family members of Malaysian citizens, diplomats, and also those who have obtain permission from the Malaysian Immigration Department to conduct official or business travel. However, all these passengers are required to undergo strict health and safety screening checks while going through the departure and arrival process as prescribed by the Ministry of Health Malaysia.

4) By comparison, since early 2021, international passenger movements have been 102,000 for March, 73,000 for February and 96,000 for January.

We hope the above explanation can elaborate on any questions that may arise and our monthly traffic report can be accessed at https://mahb.listedcompany.com/newsroom.html.
