National Insurance Fraud Database To Launch In July
Date: Friday, February 24th, 2012

A new database that will include details of every insurance fraudster registered in the country will be launched in July this year under an agreement between the Insurance Fraud Bureau (IFB) and the Association of British Insurers (ABI).

All insurers in the UK working in all areas of the business will have access to the register, in a bid to drastically reduce the rates of insurance fraud, the managing director of software firm Detica NetReveal comments.

While insurers are processing applications for car insurance policies they will be able to check with the national database whether the applicant has any history of fraud. Leader of the project Richard Davies says that awareness of the purpose of the registry will be raised among consumers and consumer organisations, while all the bodies involved are committed to pay out claims proved to be genuine as fast as possible.

Even before the official launch of the register later this year, several insurance companies will start using the database as a trial.

Car insurance experts told insurance comparison site Tiger.co.uk that the industry has long been urging the government to take steps to counteract motor insurance fraud and to penalise uninsured motorists. That's why the industry welcomes the move and hopes that the register will effectively tackle fraud, which is estimated to add an extra £50 to each policy.
