Training course to escape from a crashing helicopter
21.04.2023

Helicopter Underwater Escape Training (HUET) is among the fundamental contents of the course Basic Offshore Safety Induction & Emergency Training (BOSIET), which is currently being provided by PVD Training.

The course is approved and certified by Offshore Petroleum Industry Organization (OPITO) with certification valid for international use. The training program will provide delegates with theoretical knowledge and practical exercises, escape skills as well as first aid and survival skill at sea while an helicopter falls into the water. It is an obviously crucial course for workers that travel to and from offshore oil and gas installations and vessels by helicopter.

According to statistics from the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB), the falling speed of helicopter crash is usually faster than that of a civil aircraft, and the accident rate of helicopters is also higher, with 7.28/100,000 flight hours compared to 9.84/100,000 flight hours of a civil aircraft. Technical errors, machinery/ equipment damage and bad weather are top causes leading to plane accidents (source: IFL Science) while the trend of helicopter travel is gradually increasing in Vietnam and around the world due to particular advantages of this type of vehicle. Given the recent incidents related to helicopters, this course is essential for anyone who plans to travel by helicopter.

How to act in high-risk situations?

In case of emergency, it is very important to follow safety rules as instructed by flight attendants and the crew. What determines survival or safety levels of passengers are: properly fastening seatbelts, safe sitting posture, staying calm, identifying emergency exits, avoiding smoke inflation, leaving without pushing and shoving, escaping without luggage, equipped with escape skills, etc.

In case of landing on land, the major danger is smoke and fire, so it is necessary to locate an exit, then leave quickly by the main door/ window without hitting the propellers, going to a higher place, heading to the wind, giving signals for other people to follow, carrying survival equipment and first aids, injury treatment (if any).

In case of landing under water, it is necessary to stay calm and quickly determine the position as well as follow the instructions of the crew, fastening seat belts, applying an anti-collision posture when the aircraft lands, finding the nearest exit; after exiting, starting to activate the life jacket, pulling the hood of the breakwater, then swimming back to the safe area and waiting for rescue, etc.
